Jonas Whittaker
Jonas Whittaker was a physicist for the United Republic of America Federal Space Agency, and was part of the conspiracy to steal the URSS Alabama from the URA government, in 2070.
The conspiracy was very effectively organised, to the degree that even those involved were not aware of its full itinerary. The two main organisers, Robert Lee and Roland Shaw, had arranged for the URA colonists to be replaced by Ex-Federal Space Agency workers, who had been dismissed as ‘dissident intellectuals’ by the state.
Shaw and Lee aimed to liberate these people by securing their place aboard the Alabama. But the only way for them to do this was to have them ‘arrested’ and swapped in a remote location. To make this operation look as realistic as possible, the individuals themselves were not even told their arrests would be fake. When the ‘authorities’ came to arrest Jonas Whittaker and his family, he fled in fear, hoping to protect his family. But by doing so he ran straight into the grasp of the real authorities, and was captured and interrogated, unwittingly ruining his chance of freedom.
Thankfully for him however, Roland Shaw was able to intervene and intercept Jonas. Shaw’s role in the conspiracy had not yet been revealed, so he was able to use his position as Director for Internal Security, to fake Jonas’s death.
Jonas had been part of the team that designed the Alabama, before they were deemed unnecessary by the URA after it’s completion. But it was Jonas’s other research that was more important. Shaw had stayed behind to ensure the success of the conspiracy, even after Lee and his crew left Earth aboard the stolen ship. He was not prepared to let Jonas’s research fall into the wrong hands, research that would enable the URA to intercept Lee and the Alabama.
After Shaw faked his death, Jonas was placed into biostasis. He had been transported to a URA base on the far side of the Moon, but when the URA fell, he was left abandoned in his deep sleep for over two hundred years.
But for all that he had been through already, Jonas Whittaker’s journey was only just beginning…
