Coyote Rising Characters...
Carlos Montero aka Regil Kent
Carlos had spent his childhood growing up as a colonist on a new, alien world. It was an experience that toughened him beyond his years. It can be argued he had little choice, as his parents were killed by a ferocious creature just days after the colony had arrived on Coyote.
He is perhaps the most well travelled colonist, twice having ventured out into the wilderness of Coyote. The first time, he accompanied a hunting trip in order to avenge his parents’ death, and the second time, led his childhood friends on an ambitious expedition across Coyote, to ambitiously form their own settlement. Predictably, this naïve teenagers’ plot to run away ended in failure, and soon Carlos had to face the consequences of his actions. His girlfriend was pregnant, and one of his friends perished when the strong currents of the eastern rivers over turned their boat.
Perhaps immaturely, Carlos fled on his own, negotiating with the camp for his friends to be rescued. He then ventured even further, being the first to map large sections of Coyote. For this he gained some respect, and upon returning to Liberty he worked hard to gain forgiveness, and look after his new family.
When the colony faced the dilemma of 1000 new arrivals, a decision needed to be made quickly. No one liked the idea of new arrivals taking advantage of their hard work to survive over the four years they’d been on Coyote. It was Carlos who suggested Captain Lee lead the colony away from Liberty, in order to form a new settlement, in the east, where Carlos had explored the summer before.
This operation was successful, but both Carlos and Lee knew that they couldn’t hide forever. The presence of the new arrivals was felt, even from midland. And they were in no position to defend themselves, should the new arrivals decide to use force.
Carlos formed a small resistance movement, letting the new arrivals know that they would not give up Coyote so easily. The resistance movement, known as ‘Regil Kent’ had so far relied on guerrilla tactics, night time hit and runs, sabotaging shuttles, and commandeering guns and equipment.
But as a result of these activities, Carlos Montero was a wanted man…
